Monday 1st November 2010
Speaker - Olga Bogdashina
Sensory Perceptual Issues in Autism and Asperger Syndrome
Everyone experiences unpleasant or distracting sensory experiences at some point in their lives. Some common sensory distractions that can make life intolerable for a while include fingernails scratching against a chalkboard, itchy clothing, bright lights, or very cold foods. Every person has their own individualised list of particularly intolerable sensations and no two lists will be identical.
Extreme sensory issues are very common in autism. Some autistic children cannot tolerate sounds or hugs, while another is oblivious to sounds and craves hugs. One autistic child may have an explosive and exaggerated reaction to loud noises, while another may not react at all. Autistic children with sensory issues have difficulty filtering sensory input. Their nervous systems do not know what to block out and what to amplify.
Dr Olga Bogdashina has worked extensively in the field of autism as teacher, lecturer and researcher, with a particular interest in sensory-perceptual and communication problems in autism.
This Sensory Seminar will help teachers and other professionals working with autistic individuals to fully comprehend sensory perceptual differences in autism. Parents and Individuals with Autism will find the information will enable them to initiate relevant strategies and environmental changes to facilitate more effective learning.
Olga has written articles and books on autism and teaches and Lectures around the world. She is currently a Visiting Lecturer at Birmingham University and Consultant Psychologist for Adults with Autism. Olga has a teenage son with autism.
