Of icebergs and titanics: Navigating some of the underlying issues that drive the big behaviours presented by some people on the autistic spectrum.
John Clements is a British Clinical Psychologist, specializing for nearly 40 years in the field of developmental disabilties in general and autism in particular. A major career focus has been finding practical supports for people who present with significent behavioural challenges. He is currently self employed but has held senior posts in the NHS and British University system and recently returned to the UK after working for 10 years in California. John is the author/ co-author of several books on behavioral work, the most recent of which is people With Autism Behaving Badly (2005) and has a new book scheduled for publication in 2010.
Audience
The course is intended for both professional staff and family members and will emphasise both the understanding of behaviour and practical supports for enabling people to move forward.
Overview
The course will summarise the range of factors that influence behaviours like aggression (physical and verbal), property damage and self injury. However the course will then focus on four of the less obvious drivers of such behaviours
. Poor self regulation
. Lack of well being
. Control dynamics
. Person-environment fit
Their operation will be explained and practical supports to address the issues will be identified, both through formal presentations and case study material.
Outcomes sought
It is intended that the course increases understanding and confidence and gives participants practical ideas for supporting the people on the autisitc spectrum in whose lives they are involved, in whatever capacity
